CX National Trophy Round 2 Elite|U23 Women's

Round 1's leader, Bethany Crumpton (Storey Racing) is joined on front row of the grid by Hannah Payton (Team Kinesis UK), Eva Lechner (Clif Pro Team), local rider Ffion James (Abergavenny RC), Amira Mellor (PH-Mas/Paul Milnes/Oldfield), and Harriet Harnden (T-Mo Racing).

Crumpton gets an excellent start taking Eva Lechner with her. The two immediately opening a gap coming out of the first corner. By the end of the first lap, the pair have a lead of a few seconds, with U23 rider Anna Kay just behind, and the chase group a further 5 seconds off the lead.

Kay manages to eat into the lead of the pair but has a far from textbook barrier/run up section and loses the time she has worked so hard to claw back. In the meanwhile, there's a big dig from Crumpton on the 180 climb, but it fails to dislodge Lechner, who undertakes the Storey Racing riding in the corner as a show of force.

Over the next laps the pair continue to exchange blows, while Anna Kay is joined by fellow U23 rider Ffion James, with Harriet Harnden in 5th place chipping away at the lead of the second group. Crumpton ups the pace with 3 laps to go with Lechner unable to match, the lead is 4 seconds over the line.

Crumpton is keeping the pace high over the next 2 laps, lacing her way through the woods with ease. She takes the bell with a 40 second gap over Lechner. Anna Kay has managed to shake Ffion James, both of who have taken the fight to the Elite field and can hold the their heads high.

Bethany Crumpton cracks a smile coming out of the final bend, rasing her arms, taking the win 30 seconds ahead of Lechner, and extending her lead in the overall standings and keeping the yellow series leader going into the 3rd round of the series.

Its incredible to get my first c1 win against the standard of Eva. She’s an awesome bike rider so to be able to race one on one against her and win is quite over whelming that i can achieve this. I’m glad i could do all my yellow goodies justice on such a great course set up by the guys behind Crosstober fest. Thoroughly enjoyed it :D

After never riding at Abergavenny before I was very excited and nervous. But the course flowed so well and I really enjoyed picking my way through. I was in about 5th after the start and just rode in the wheels and continued to push to the next one. Me and ffion rode together for the middle section of the race but i just tried to focus on what was ahead and slowly had a gap by the finish.

I loved the course and I am super happy to now be leading the u23s and in 2nd elite in the overall series standings !!

Having raced cross for 3 years now I decided to take the step and try a National Trophy series, I chose the closest one to me –Abergavenny.

After doing a few warm up laps I soon realized that my cornering was going to perhaps hold me back and wished I had been practicing them more. Gridded pretty much at the back, I did my best to sprint through on the short tarmac section before we entered the body of the course.

Due to the pretty instant appearance of many corners this dragged the field out quickly with my end…the back end of the field taking quite a bit of time to get round them. The reality of this for me was watching the majority of riders steam ahead whilst I got more frustrated and knackered at the back and to honest – a little demoralized.

There is an 80% rule which basically means you get pulled if your time is 80% slower than the leader so after 2 laps I was pulled, which is quite frustrating as you want to keep some energy to finish the race and not blow everything you have in the tank straight away.

Regardless of the above I’m glad I went, I’m glad I tried and I’m glad I was given the opportunity to race which I am very thankful for. As much as I would love to come back all guns blazing at the next National trophy, I will be sticking to my local league where I have the chance to podium and compete against those at a similar level.
