Lovelo Crossmas #13 - Mens

Rider comments

Slip and slide at the start trying to get power down. Got stuck in about 10th trying to get through the congestion. Once Jon and I made it through we settled in to a good battle and trying to pull the leader back who got a way better start. I lost contact with Jon with about a lap and a half to go and he caught the leader going passed and taking the win. I couldn’t quite close that gap. Course was excellent, nice and technical but the tyres had so much grip.

I normally race Wessex league but with no race for the next month I decided give central a go. I was in two minds to race yesterday but will be my last race before the national champs. I started well and was feeling good considering the conditions. I built a good 30secs lead and felt confident in holding it to the end but having no support and only one bike my bike slowly got worse every lap. By the halfway point I only had use of the two smallest gears and that was enough for second place to pass me on the last lap. I was gutted not to take the win but on days like that you definitely need two bikes. Despite this I really enjoyed the course and the form is good, hopefully I'll be back next year to take the win

I had my customary poor start (singlespeeds don't tend to go well on muddy standing starts with next to no traction) and was lying somewhere around 10th for most of the first lap. I made my way through a few bottlenecks by opting to run some sections, sneaking up the inside of corners. Neil and I settled into second and third and were able to push each other on for most of the remainder of the race, before I managed to bridge across to and pass the leader with one lap to go, who was suffering mechanical issues thanks to the mud (this is where singlespeeds excel).

Despite fairly innocuous appearances it's a course that's not only a test of bike handling and power but also decision making (ride vs run, that line vs this line): everything a cross course should provide. Thanks Lovelo!
